About the museum
The museum in Vysoké Mýto was founded in 1871, when the town, on the proposal of the miller and chronicler Karlouš Richtr, set up a room in the town hall for collections and for the stored municipal archive. According to its own statement, it is the oldest institution of its kind in Bohemia. After a decline in the 1870s, activity was revived by a museum committee; the collections moved between several buildings, and from 1907 the museum used the house of the Šember family. It was ceremonially opened there on 3 May 1914, and it is still housed there today.
From 1960 it operated as a district museum and gradually expanded into two neighbouring burgher houses. In 2003 it received regional status, and the Pardubice Region became its founder. A restoration workshop, an archaeological department and a documentation department were added.
In 2026 the museum was given the name Krajské technické muzeum (Regional Technical Museum) and moved its main seat to the former agricultural school building on Kpt. Poplera Street. The new permanent exhibitions present the technical heritage and industrial traditions of the Pardubice Region, for example cycling, coachbuilding or aviation, and are complemented by open storage rooms, workshops and spaces for education. The Šember House remains the property of the museum and is used for short-term exhibitions, lectures and the exhibition Vysoké Mýto světové (Vysoké Mýto of the World). The library, the reading room and the archaeological and conservation department also continue to operate.
