About the museum
Košumberk Castle was founded in the second half of the 13th century, and the first written mention of it dates from 1312. In 1372 it was owned by the lords of Chlum, founders of the Slavata family line, who rebuilt it in the late Gothic style. In 1573 the castle burned down, and around 1600 a Renaissance château was added to it.
In 1684 the Jesuits acquired the complex and established a church and a residence here. At the end of the 18th century the castle was already deserted and gradually decayed. In 1922 the Družstvo pro záchranu hradu Košumberka (Cooperative for the Rescue of Košumberk Castle), to which the estate owner, Prince of Thurn and Taxis, had given the castle, secured the ruins.
Today the torso of the square tower, part of the palace walls, the gate and the remains of the fortifications stand. The only surviving building is the Renaissance burgrave's house, where the castle museum is housed and from which the guided tours set out. The castle is owned and operated by the town of Luže.
