About the museum
The Municipal Museum in Dvůr Králové nad Labem was founded in 1891. The first exhibition on the history of the town and region opened in 1923 in the building of the old town hall. After the war the museum acquired premises in the Neumann villa, where a gallery operated and from 1965 also the Textile Museum. In 1969 the villa passed to the East Bohemian Zoological Garden, the museum temporarily closed, and for its needs it decided to restore the Kohout Courtyard complex.
The Kohout Courtyard is a Baroque monument, built for the needs of the Sporck foundation's large estate in Choustníkovo Hradiště. Its dominant feature is the gate with a relief of St Florian and a depiction of the courtyard with the year 1738. Of the original farmstead the main building, the granary and the stable survive. The main building has served the museum since 1978 and underwent complete reconstruction in 2012–2013. The former granary opened in 1998, and in 2013 a panoramic lift was added to it.
Today the museum offers permanent exhibitions on the history of the town and the textile industry, on the tradition of making Christmas ornaments, and a Baroque Stations of the Cross by Jan Václav Bergl, a native of Dvůr Králové. The granary also has exhibition spaces and a hall for concerts and lectures.
