About the museum

The Municipal Museum in Žebrák was founded in 1925 and was originally housed in a room of a former inn in the town hall. It opened to the public on 22 May 1927. The natural history department then consisted of rocks and minerals from the surroundings of the town and a collection of fossilised plants from the Stilec basin.

Today the museum is located on the first floor of the former school building on the main square of Žebrák, where it shares premises with the town library and the basic art school. On 1 December 1988 the District Museum in Beroun took over the Žebrák museum as its branch, and today it is managed by the Museum of the Czech Karst (Muzeum Českého krasu). Each season it prepares one exhibition here.

The permanent exhibition From the History of the Town of Žebrák, renewed in 2019, presents the history of the royal chamber town and its significant natives, among them the national revivalist brothers Nejedlý and the poet Šebestián Hněvkovský. It also includes a transcript of the charter of King Wenceslas IV which elevated Žebrák to a town.
