About the museum
The Muzeum Hořovicka is housed in rented rooms of the so-called Old Castle in Hořovice. The Hořovice branch of the Muzeum Českého krasu opened to visitors on 1 April 2017 and continued a long museum tradition in Hořovice that dates back to the 1890s. The foundations of the local collections were linked to the Czech-Slavonic Ethnographic Exhibition held in Prague in 1895.
The exhibition is on the first floor and tells the story of life in the region. In the corridor, visitors are greeted by a comic strip about the transformation of an everyday object into a museum exhibit, and they can also look into a museum storeroom from the mid-20th century. The first room shows a middle-class interior from the first half of the 20th century, with natural science and social science exhibits in wooden display cases.
The middle room recalls the tradition of nail-making in the Hořovice area and presents artistic cast iron from the local foundries. The last room is devoted to the Brdy forest and to wood as an everyday material of our ancestors; it is dominated by a map of the Hořovice estate from 1890, with photographs of gamekeepers' lodges, hunting lodges and forestry offices from the area of the former Brdy military training area.
