About the museum

Žebrák Castle was built in the second half of the 13th century as a guard castle of the Zajíc of Valdek lords, at the crossroads of the roads to Křivoklát and Zbiroh. Later it was bought by the Bohemian king John of Luxembourg. In 1351 the firstborn son of Charles IV died at the castle, and from then on the emperor did not like the castle.

Wenceslas IV restored the castle's glory and rebuilt it entirely. After a fire in 1526 the royal chamber gave up the repair and handed the castle over to pledge holders. They searched the castle for hidden treasure, demolishing the walls of the old palace in the process, and the castle turned into a ruin.

Until the flood of 1872 the castle was surrounded by ponds, and until 1926 a local family lived in it. The main tower is now used as a lookout. The castle is managed by the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ) together with the nearby Točník castle.
