About the museum

The beginnings of museum work in Velká Bíteš go back a hundred years: the teacher Jan Tiray organized the town's documents and drew attention to objects worth protecting. On his initiative a museum society was founded, and on 16 August 1925 the municipal museum was officially opened. After the war it found a permanent home in the former small church of the Jednota bratrská (Unity of Brethren), but in 1960, when the small districts were abolished, district museum operations also ended and museum activity fell silent for a long time. It was revived in 1985, and a full-fledged small local history museum emerged only after 1989.

Today the museum is an organizational unit of the town of Velká Bíteš and is located in the rear part of the listed house no. 5 on Masaryk Square. Its mission is to build a collection documenting the history of the town; most of the objects come from donations by local residents and natives. One paid employee works there with volunteer collaborators, supported by the Muzejní spolek Velkobítešska (Velká Bíteš Museum Society). The building also houses a detached workplace for traditional folk culture of the Muzeum Vysočiny Třebíč (Vysočina Museum in Třebíč).
