About the museum
The Podhorácké Museum is housed in the grounds of the Cistercian monastery Porta coeli in Předklášteří near Tišnov, a national cultural monument. It is today the only functioning Cistercian monastery in Moravia and the only female Cistercian monastery in the Czech Republic. The complex has an early Gothic core, to which Gothic, Renaissance and especially Baroque additions were made. The museum is in the former provostry building and has been based there since 1955; today it is a branch of the Muzeum Brněnska (Brno Region Museum).
Visitors enter through a Baroque gate and along a lime-tree avenue to the main courtyard, with the richly decorated Gothic portal of the monastery church. The church can be visited on guided tours at hourly intervals.
Four permanent exhibitions can be visited separately: the newly designed exhibition on the history and present of the Porta coeli monastery; a middle-class living interior from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, with stories of Tišnov families; a mineralogical and palaeontological exhibition in the corridor of the upper floor; and the regional exhibition Minerals of the Tišnov Region, which is temporarily closed. The museum also holds seasonal exhibitions and educational programmes for schools.
