About the museum

The municipal museum in Velvary opened its collections to the public as early as the first half of the 20th century; the town marked the seventieth anniversary of this step in 2002. Today the museum is run by the town of Velvary and offers visitors a tour of three buildings, with a shared ticket office in the main building on Pražská Street.

The permanent exhibition in the main building occupies six rooms and presents the history of Velvary and its surroundings. Visitors can see archaeological finds from the Stone Age to the early Middle Ages, including part of the Malovary tin hoard, the beginnings of volunteer firefighting, life in the town in the 19th and early 20th centuries, fashion and industry of the First Republic, a Baroque ceiling with paintings, and a small organ. A separate part is the “old school” with period benches, and an Art Nouveau hall with a collection of paintings by Jiří Georg Kars, a painter of the Paris school.

The museum also includes the Prague Gate, with information on the original town fortifications, photographs from the First World War by Jindřich Bišický, and a camera obscura that projects Pražská ulice (Prague Street) onto the walls of a darkened room. The granary gallery in the deanery courtyard offers an ethnographic exhibition and an exhibition on gingerbread-making, but it is closed until further notice because of the reconstruction of its lighting.
