About the museum

The Muzeum břidlice (Slate Museum) was founded in 1996 in a reconstructed Baroque water mill from the first half of the 18th century in Budišov nad Budišovkou. The building is protected as a cultural monument, and the museum’s focus on slate makes it one of the few of its kind in the country. It is run by the Středisko volného času Budišov nad Budišovkou (leisure centre).

In 2013 the museum underwent a fundamental reconstruction, during which new information panels were added and the lower floor was opened to the public, with an exhibition on the use of slate in everyday life. In 2015 the museum presented itself in a new form with four exhibitions.

The exhibition explains the formation of slate in the Nízký Jeseník, its mining and processing, and shows the miners’ tools and products ranging from roofing to school slate boards and writing slates, as well as slate clocks; it also introduces fossils. A separate exhibition is devoted to the mining of silver and lead in the Budišov area, another to industry in the 20th century, and the last follows the history of the town from the 13th century. A short documentary shows visitors mining in a deep mine.

In the museum garden there is a small geological park with a bat adit, slate heaps, examples of fossils and a splitting shed, where visitors can try splitting slate.
