About the museum

The earliest mention of the museum building dates from 1407, when it was a Catholic hospital with the church of All Saints, founded by the widow Anežka of Šternberk. In 1480–1488 the Unity of the Brethren also used the complex as a school, and in 1614–1618 it was rebuilt as a congregation building of the Brethren. Jan Amos Komenský worked in Fulnek in 1618–1621 as administrator of the congregation, school rector and priest.

After the Unity of the Brethren left, the buildings changed their purpose: in the 17th century they served, for example, as a riding school and a granary, and from the early 18th century again as a hospital with a chapel and the Baroque palace of the merchant Eliáš Knurr. In 1954 the Památník J. A. Komenského was opened here, and three years later the exhibition was extended to the whole hospital complex and chapel.

After almost three years of reconstruction, the museum reopened in 2021 as Svět Komenského Fulnek. Today's exhibition Na prahu vichřice shows Komenský as the townspeople of a small subject town could have known him on the threshold of the Thirty Years' War, and the building itself is regarded as part of the collection.
