About the museum
The Hradec promontory has been settled continuously since around 2000 BC. The building complex began with a Slavic stronghold, and in the middle of the 13th century King Přemysl Otakar II had a magnificent Gothic castle built here. In 1279–1281 his widow Kunhuta resided here. From the early 16th century the castle passed among various pledge holders, and from 1585 Kašpar Pruskovský z Pruskova rebuilt it as a Renaissance residence with an ornamental garden and a forest park.
In 1778 the estate was acquired by the Prussian princes Lichnovští z Voštic. After a fire in 1796, the family had the chateau remodelled in the Empire style at the beginning of the 19th century. In the second half of the 19th century the neo-Gothic Red Chateau was added, with stables, a carriage house and a castle wall, and the surroundings were transformed into a natural landscape park. The last building in the complex was the pseudo-Gothic White Tower.
The Lichnovští family hosted many notable guests at Hradec, among them Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Liszt and Josef Mánes. In May 1945 the estate was confiscated, and the chateau was soon opened to the public. A comprehensive restoration took place from 1978 onwards, and a large part of the chateau is now accessible. Since 1962 the music competition Beethovenův Hradec has been held every June.
