About the museum
The museum was founded in 1945 as a centre for local history work of the then Broumov district. It followed on from a number of pre-war collections: a town hall depository with the oldest municipal monuments, a monastery depository, and private collections, above all those of the manufacturers Langer and Nowotný. After the war the original German population had to leave and left behind many valuable objects, but in the chaos of the time the opportunity to supplement the collections was only partly used.
The first permanent exhibition on the history of the town opened in 1948. Since 1980 the museum has been housed on the first floor of the abbot’s wing (prelature) of the Benedictine monastery, a national cultural monument in the centre of the town. The current permanent exhibition was created in 1990, and the museum is run by the town of Broumov.
The display relies almost entirely on three-dimensional objects and leads through six halls of the representative part of the prelature with fresco decoration, including the monumental Kamenný sál (Stone Hall). It is complemented by short-term thematic exhibitions in three halls of the former private apartment of the abbot. In 2025 a new audio guide with interactive elements modernised the exhibition. The museum looks after the collections of the town and of the museum itself, and also offers a research service.
