Stará škola Dřevěnka

Baroque log school from 1785 in Police nad Metují, with displays of school classrooms and a teacher’s flat from the early 20th century.

About the museum

The Dřevěnka is the original Baroque two-storey log building with a shingled mansard roof, built in 1785 to replace an unsuitable wooden school from 1705. Teaching took place there until 1857. On the ground floor there were two classrooms, and on the upper floor the teachers’ flats.

Around 1900 a carpentry workshop was set up on the ground floor. The present interiors are not original and were altered in the 1990s; the only original furnishing that has survived is the wooden staircase in the entrance hall. The building is now run by the Muzeum Náchodska.

The exhibition does not depict the school as it was during its teaching years from 1785 to 1856, but a later version: on the ground floor there are displays of two school classrooms, and on the upper floor a replica of a teacher’s flat from the early 20th century. The garden behind the school has two original privies.
