About the museum
The Muzeum Českého ráje v Turnově (Museum of the Bohemian Paradise in Turnov) was founded in 1886 and is one of the oldest regional museums in the Czech Republic. Its original collections consisted of historic objects, guild and artistic monuments, archaeological finds and holdings of the municipal archive. In the 1930s, collections of geology, mineralogy, precious stones and goldsmiths’ work were built up, which gave the museum its present specialisation.
In 1963 the permanent exhibitions of mineralogy, history, Turnov stonemasonry and ethnography were opened to the public, and visitor numbers rose considerably. In 1966 the museum gained the status of a district museum and took over the Dlaskův statek (Dlask farmstead) in Dolánky. The gallery, which serves as an exhibition, lecture and social hall, was built in 1974; the reconstruction of a former prison for storing the collections was completed in 1992. Since 2004 the founder has been the Liberec Region.
The collections include precious stones from Czech and world sites, historic garnet jewellery and contemporary jewellery by authors from international symposia. Each year the museum stages around 30 exhibitions and also organises international symposia of jewellers and carvers.
