About the museum

The Franz Kafka Museum opened in the summer of 2005 in the unique premises of Herget's Brickworks on the Malá Strana bank of the Vltava. The permanent exhibition offers a view of the world of Franz Kafka (1883–1924), the Prague-born writer who wrote in German and is one of the most important authors of world literature of the 20th century.

The exhibition presents most of the first editions of Kafka's works, correspondence, diaries, manuscripts, photographs and drawings, some of which have never been exhibited before. They are complemented by three-dimensional objects, audiovisual programmes and music created especially for the exhibition.

The exhibition is divided into two parts. The first, Kafka in Prague – Existential Space, shows how the city shaped the writer's life and what traces it left there. The second, Prague in Kafka – Imaginary Topography, follows how the real Prague was transformed in his prose into a metaphorical image. The whole is conceived as a dark and symbolic journey that reflects the existential anxiety, alienation and absurdity central to Kafka's work. The museum is operated by the company Muchovo muzeum s.r.o.
