About the museum

The museum is run by the company RUDOLF JELÍNEK a.s., which produces alcoholic drinks, mainly fruit spirits. According to the company, the tradition of distilling in Vizovice goes back to 1585; the company itself was founded in 1894, has been exporting to the USA since 1934, and has had its own fruit orchards since 2003.

The museum is housed in a late Renaissance house on U Lužického semináře Street in Malá Strana, which was formerly called U Bílého střevíce (At the White Shoe), U Bílé kuželky (At the White Skittle) or U Bílého poháru (At the White Goblet). The house was probably built at the beginning of the 17th century for Catholic students from Lusatia. It later had several owners and underwent Baroque and Classicist alterations. In 1966 the actress Slávka Budínová bought it and had it completely rebuilt; a new building in a historicising style was added to the historic part. During the flood of 2002 the ground floor was flooded, and after the actress's death the empty house began to decay.

In 2011 the company RUDOLF JELÍNEK bought the house with the aim of creating a historic Destilační země (Distillation Country) there. The museum opened to visitors in 2019. Today it offers a modern interactive exhibition with large-screen projections, authentic exhibits, virtual reality and stories about fruit growing, production and history, ending with a tasting at the bar.
