About the museum
The Prague toy museum at the Castle grew out of the collection of the caricaturist and collector Ivan Steiger, who had already opened a toy museum in Munich in 1983. From 1994 his extensive collection, ranked among the largest in the world, was exhibited in the Nejvyšší purkrabství building on Jiřská Street at Prague Castle.
Today the museum is run by a new owner under the name Národní muzeum hraček (National Toy Museum). It presents itself as the home of the largest collection of Czech and Czechoslovak toys, which shows the richness of Czech toymaking. The exhibition includes handmade wooden toys, retro toy cars, dolls, construction sets and modern designer pieces, and maps the history and present of domestic toymaking.
The museum is on the second floor, and the route to it leads only by stairs. For closed groups it offers guided tours focused on the history of Czech toys, and educational programmes for schools and families which explain, in an entertaining way, the technological development of toys and their cultural significance.
