About the museum

The studio villa on Hradčany was built in 1910–1911 by the sculptor, graphic artist and architect František Bílek, to his own designs. Bílek wanted to create complete environments in which his works could express themselves in their full spiritual depth, and the building is therefore conceived as an idea: the segmental floor plan recalls the trace of a scythe cutting grain, and the columns are meant to refer to sheaves. Raw brick and roughly worked stone bring the house close to nature and to human labour. The irregularly arranged interior is dominated by a tall studio.

Since 1963 the villa has been managed by the Prague City Gallery. In June 2022, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Bílek’s birth, it reopened to the public after renovations, with a new permanent exhibition. The aim was to remove disruptive and non-original elements and to make the interiors accessible more sensitively, so that the house now feels more lived-in and the artist’s works are installed with regard to their spiritual essence.

The exhibition presents above all Bílek’s early sculptural work, full of mysticism. In the former workshop stand monumental figurative compositions, for example Úžas, Mojžíš and a colossal design for the Hus Monument in Prague, along with works in wood, graphic art and ceramics. In the family dining room, the study and the other rooms, the first works, designs for monuments and portraits are arranged by theme, and the largest room on the first floor is devoted to a model of the Žižka Monument from 1912 to 1925.
