About the museum
Prague Castle was traditionally founded around 880 by Prince Bořivoj of the Přemyslid dynasty. According to the Guinness World Records, it is the largest contiguous castle complex in the world. It covers almost 70,000 m² and is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It consists of an extensive group of palaces and church buildings in a variety of styles, from remnants of Romanesque buildings from the 10th century, through Gothic alterations in the 14th century, to the work of the Slovenian architect Josip Plečnik during the First Republic and the latest renovations at the end of the 20th century.
Visitors can enter several paid sites in the complex: St Vitus Cathedral and its tower, the Old Royal Palace, the Basilica of St George, Golden Lane with the Daliborka Tower and the Powder Tower Mihulka. Long-term exhibitions include The Story of Prague Castle, the Castle Guard Exhibition, the Rožmberk Palace and the Prague Castle Picture Gallery. The grounds are open daily from 6:00 to 22:00 after a security check.
The castle is still the seat of the head of state and at the same time an important cultural institution. Within the complex, the guard is changed every hour at the Gate of the Giants and on the Powder Bridge, and every day at 12:00 there is a ceremonial changing of the guard in the First Courtyard.
