About the museum

Klášterec Castle stands on a promontory above the Ohře river at the foot of the Krušné Mountains and is one of the most important historic seats in north-western Bohemia. The name of the town and the castle refers to a small monastery that Benedictines from Postoloprty founded here around 1250. In 1514 Volf Dětřich Fictum had a manor house built, which was rebuilt into a Renaissance castle at the end of the 16th century. From 1623 the castle belonged to the Thun-Hohenstein family and remained their property until 1945. After fires in 1639, 1784 and 1856 it was rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic form it has today.

Since 1953 the castle has housed a porcelain exhibition from the collections of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague. The history of Czech porcelain is presented in 21 rooms on the first floor, and four further halls and a corridor offer an overview of the production of old Oriental and European porcelain, including examples from China and Japan.

Further circuits include the Fairy-Tale Land of Vítězslava Klimtová, with an exhibition of Czech fairy tales in the cellar rooms; Playful Middle Ages, with scenes from town life, justice and the starvation dungeon; an exhibition of buildings made from more than 200,000 bricks of a well-known construction toy; and an observation tower more than 20 metres high. The site includes a ten-hectare English park with about 150 tree species and a sala terrena with sculptures by Jan Brokoff.
