About the museum
The museum in Nové Strašecí was founded in 1894 and is the oldest museum in the Rakovník region. In 2024 it celebrated 130 years of existence. Unlike many other Czech museums, it did not arise in connection with the Czechoslovak Ethnographic Exhibition, but on the initiative of the local Reading Society and its secretary, Jindřich Michálek. The society originally devoted itself to educating its members and lending books, and gradually became the bearer of the town's cultural life.
The idea of setting up a museum in Nové Strašecí was first raised at a meeting of the society's committee on 8 July 1892. The inspiration came from the newly established museum in Slaný, where the teacher and writer Václav Štech had been one of the pioneers. Permission to set up the Nové Strašecí Museum Society was granted on 5 May 1894.
Today the museum is a branch of the T. G. M. Museum in Rakovník and looks after a large holding of thousands of collection objects and books. It offers visitors two permanent exhibitions, a Celtic one and an interactive folk-art one. Its professional work is complemented by temporary exhibitions, lectures, workshops for children and for families with children, and other cultural programmes.
