About the museum
Since 1921, when it became the summer residence of President Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, Lány has been inseparably linked with his personality. The first Czechoslovak president grew fond of the village, and he is also buried in the Lány cemetery. After 1989 the idea of commemorating his legacy could be realised: at the start of 1990, members of the local Civic Forum together with the Sokol gymnastics association put on a small exhibition in the Sokol hall, which the municipal office later ran.
In 1995 a foundation was set up with the aim of establishing a worthy museum in Lány. In 1998 the Rakovník District Museum produced a more professional exhibition in the Classic Hotel in Lány and, at the foundation’s request, took over the preparation of the future museum. In December 2002 the museum received the restored Maria Theresa granary as a gift from the foundation, and the permanent exhibition began to be built there.
The grand opening took place on 7 March 2003. The museum is the most important branch of the Muzeum T. G. M. Rakovník. The exhibition takes visitors through the Masaryk family: from the reconstructed flat in Thunovská Street, through his professorial period and the First World War with a legionnaires’ carriage, up to the presidential period. A new section is devoted to the First Republic. Among the most valuable exhibits are Masaryk’s riding outfit, travelling trunks, hat and furniture from his study.
