About the museum

The Muzeum Podkrkonoší v Trutnově was founded as a town museum in 1890 by the then mayor, Josef Flögel. The collections were initially gathered in the building of the Realschule on Školní Street and numbered only a few dozen objects. Only in the mid-1920s did systematic collecting begin, and in 1927 the museum obtained several rooms in the building of the former castle. In 1950 the whole building was assigned exclusively to the museum.

The building stands on the site of the former Trutnov castle, which was founded together with the town after 1250 as part of the town fortifications, and from which the Trutnov manor was administered from the 13th to the 16th century. The museum also includes the former castle cellars, in which a tenant runs a restaurant and music club. The building underwent major renovations in the 1960s and 1980s and its last major reconstruction in 2012; in 2017 new exhibitions were created recalling the castle and palace tradition of the building.

The museum is a regional museum for the Trutnov district and the surrounding Krkonoše and Podkrkonoší area. The town of Trutnov has been its founder since 2008. Its collections include archaeology, ethnography, cultural history, militaria, applied arts and fine art; the building also houses a public library with a specialized collection.
