About the museum
The first municipal museum in Hostinné was founded in 1927 on the initiative of local citizens and of the mayor, who made space available for it in the town hall. It operated until 1945. In the late 1960s the museum was closed, and its collections were moved to larger district museums, where a number of objects were lost or destroyed.
After 1989 a small historical exhibition was set up in the town hall; it was opened to the public in 1998 and was in use until autumn 2011. In 2007 the original Hostinné collection (hostinská sbírka) of more than 2,000 objects returned to the town. Thanks to a state grant covering 92% of the costs, the former Franciscan monastery was renovated from 2009, and the museum received new premises on its first floor.
Today's exhibition is housed in the original Franciscan cells from the second half of the 17th century. It traces the development of one of the oldest towns of the Podkrkonoší (foothills of the Krkonoše) from the settlement of the upper Elbe region in the early 13th century, through the founding of the town, to the period just after the Second World War. It also recalls the activity of the Franciscan order in the town.
