About the museum

The museum is located in a sensitively reconstructed historic building on the square in Chvalšiny, the birthplace of Josef Rosenauer, the creator of the Schwarzenberg Canal. The museum project was carried out in 1999–2000 on the initiative of the municipal office with support from the PHARE programme, and the European Union contributed EUR 288,970 towards its establishment.

The largest part of the exhibition is devoted to the person and work of Ing. Josef Rosenauer (1735–1804), whose life is documented by papers, paintings, photographs and historical objects. The centrepiece of the exhibition on the history of the canal is a six-metre-long landscape model of the entire construction, with period maps and measuring instruments. Visitors also learn about sáh stones and about the difference between dřeváky and mejšlaty.

Other exhibitions present the history of the village, its nature and the natural monuments of this part of the protected area, archaeological finds from the surroundings of Chvalšiny, and a separate exhibition on forestry and timber in Šumava. The latter shows the logging of wood for floating, the history of timber production and examples of folk wooden products.
