About the museum
The museum is housed on the first floor of the historic so-called Mint building from the 15th century, on Jiří z Poděbrad Square. The Renaissance house with a Gothic core was later rebuilt in the Baroque style, and its Empire façade dates from 1801. From 1561 it served as the seat of the perkmistr's office (the mining authority) in the royal mining town on the gold-bearing stream Kocába.
The town of Nový Knín set up the Gold Museum in 1999 in cooperation with the Český klub zlatokopů (Czech Gold Prospectors Club), on the occasion of the World Gold Panning Championship. Exhibits were lent or donated by, among others, the National Museum, the National Technical Museum, the Příbram Mining Museum and a number of geologists and collectors. The originally temporary exhibition became permanent due to great public interest, and since 2000 the museum has been a branch of the Příbram Mining Museum.
The exhibitions trace gold mining and processing in the Nový Knín area from the earliest times to the 20th century, the history of the town, local crafts and industry, and the history of the World Gold Panning Championship. A separate section recalls the partnership with the Italian association of municipalities Valle di Ledro, whose residents, displaced during the First World War, found refuge in Nový Knín. The museum also serves as an information centre for the Brdy–Vltava region.
