About the museum
The permanent exhibition of the museum in Žlutice is devoted to the history of the town and to the monuments in its surroundings, documented by archaeological finds and charters. It takes visitors through the development of Žlutice up to the Baroque period and recalls, for example, the Hussite battle on the hill Vladař in 1421, shown in a large-scale model.
An important part of the collection is the Žlutický kancionál (Žlutice Cantional), a Renaissance illuminated manuscript and a national cultural monument. The original is now kept in the Památník národního písemnictví (Museum of Czech Literature) in Prague; until 1977 it was displayed in the town museum, where a copy and a flip-through copy for visitors are now shown.
The old gaol (šatlava) survives in the former court building. Since 2021 it has housed an interactive exhibition on útrpné právo (judicial torture), created by the artist Veronika Kudláčková Psotková; the investor was the town of Žlutice, with considerable help from the Karlovy Vary Region. Beneath the museum there is a lapidarium with statues, groups of statues and fragments of historical objects from Žlutice and the surroundings.
