About the museum

The first Litoměřice museum, the Museum of the Industrial Society, was founded in 1874 thanks to the painter Franz Krause, who became its director. After his death the collections stagnated and gradually turned into a mixed assortment of objects. In 1910 the town therefore established its own local history museum, the Stadtmuseum, took over the society’s collections and housed them in the old town hall. A few days before the exhibition was due to open, however, the building’s façade collapsed and a large part of the collections, above all glass, porcelain, paintings and coins, was destroyed. The repaired building was able to open the collections to the public only in 1927.

After 1940 the museum took over the collections of the diocesan museum, and after the war it grew with objects from confiscations and from closed museums. In 1955 the collections of the museum in Úštěk were added, and five years later those of four other museums in Třebenice, Libochovice, Roudnice nad Labem and Lovosice. Because of a lack of space, part of the holdings was moved to a storage facility in Ploskovice. A new permanent exhibition was created in 1980–1982, and in 1983 the collections of the museum in Budyně nad Ohří were added.

After the districts were abolished in 2002, the district local history museum became the Oblastní muzeum v Litoměřicích, a contributory organisation of the Ústí Region. The museum includes the Karel Hynek Mácha Memorial in the house Na Vikárce, where the poet died in 1836. The original permanent exhibition in the main building is now closed while its new form is being prepared.
