About the museum
The museum commemorates the geologist, volcanologist and university professor Josef Emanuel Hibsch (1852–1940), who was born and worked in Homole u Panny. Hibsch spent thirty-four years as a professor at the Royal Czech Agricultural Academy in Děčín-Libverda, today the Anton Emanuel Komers Secondary School of Horticulture and Agriculture, and was one of the most important European volcanologists of his time.
The museum was founded in 2002 in the former school building in Homole, which Hibsch himself attended as a child. It is next to the municipal office. The exhibition documents the life and work of the scholar and also presents the geology and mineralogy of the České středohoří: it shows minerals and rocks that reveal the geological structure and special features of this region. On a hill in front of the nearby church, a memorial plaque to Hibsch also stands on a boulder.
