About the museum
The Severočeská galerie výtvarného umění v Litoměřicích was established in 1956, and its collections were first opened to the public in 1958. Since 2001 it has been a contributory organisation of the Ústí nad Labem Region. It is located in the town centre on Michalská Street, in a four-winged, multi-storey building around a small courtyard, whose rear wall stands on the inner Gothic town wall from the 14th century.
The gallery focuses on Czech art from the 14th century to the present and, on a national scale, on collecting, preserving and presenting insitní art. The collections form the basis of its own exhibition programme, but the gallery also lends them to exhibitions by other institutions at home and abroad. The gallery includes a specialist library and also the Gallery and Museum of the Litoměřice Diocese in a building on Mírové náměstí.
The gallery’s buildings also include the secularised Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in Jezuitská Street, which is open in summer and used for cultural events. The Diocesan Museum and the Museum of Insitní Art on Mírové náměstí are under reconstruction.
