About the museum

The castle at Kunín developed from a smaller fortified house, of which little is known except that it already stood at the end of the 16th century and often changed owners. In 1723 Maria Eleonora of Liechtenstein acquired the estate and brought it as a dowry to her husband Friedrich August Harrach. Between 1725 and 1734 the couple had the fortified house rebuilt as a comfortable Baroque country seat to a design by the Viennese architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt. The family never lived there permanently; the castle served mainly for rest.

The castle's most important period came at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries under Countess Maria Walburga of Waldburg-Zeil, daughter of Xaver Harrach. She founded a modern educational institute for young people, one of the most progressive in Central Europe, and the castle became a centre of learning in Moravia. She bequeathed the castle to her favourite pupil and adoptive grandson, Friedrich Emil Schindler.

In 1870 Ernst Egon of Fürstenberg bought the castle and used it as a summer residence; afterwards it belonged to the Brno industrialist Victor Bauer and his family (1895–1945). After the war the Bauer family's property was confiscated. Today the castle is managed by the Muzeum Novojičínska (Nový Jičín Museum). The tour leads through the guest rooms, bedrooms and classrooms of the castle school, the picture gallery, the hunting room and the ladies' room, the dining room and the music and dance hall. From the church corridor one enters the large hall with Renaissance portraits of the Hohenems family, and the tour ends in the attic with a unique Baroque chimney system.
