About the museum

Nová Horka developed as a small noble seat, first mentioned in 1374 and belonging to the Hukvaldy episcopal estate. In the 16th century a fortified house is recorded here, which from 1660 was owned by the Vetter von der Lilie family, who held it until 1945. Around 1742 Count Karel Josef Vetter began rebuilding the fortified house into a generous Baroque castle, which became the economic and cultural centre of the surroundings and earned the nickname “Little Vienna”. The castle chapel of the Holy Cross was built or extended probably around 1775.

Debts of the heirs at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries led to the estate being placed under state administration and leased out. After 1856 Count Felix Vetter bought out the shares of the other heirs; after a fire in 1857 he generously restored the castle and laid out the surrounding park in the English landscape style. In 1913–1945 the owner was Moritz Vetter; after his death the estate was confiscated in autumn 1945.

After the war the building served social care: first as a home for disabled children, later as a home for the elderly, an institution for women and finally a home for people with disabilities. The castle was declared a cultural monument in 1958. In 2016 the region decided to return the complex to its original appearance; the Muzeum Novojičínska took over the administration, and the building was reconstructed with support from the region and European funds. Since 2020 the castle has been open to the public with a guided tour.
