About the museum

The idea of building a worthy memorial to the world-famous Palaeolithic site at Předmostí had been around since the late 1930s. At the beginning of the 1970s Bohuslav Klíma proposed instead of a monument to preserve and open to the public an authentic remnant of the cultural layer. The first temporary exhibition, however, was protected only by wire mesh, and after a few years it disappeared.

The present memorial was built in 2006 as a building of the City of Přerov, in cooperation with the Komenský Museum in Přerov and the Archaeological Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Brno. The construction was largely financed from the Interreg IIIA Czech Republic – Poland programme and is part of the project Předmostím až do pravěku (From Předmostí to Prehistory); the Polish counterpart is the Dinopark in Ozimek. After the rough construction was completed, an archaeological excavation took place directly inside, which for the first time in the Czech Republic made it possible to preserve find layers from the Older Palaeolithic on site and open them to the public.

On a gentle slope, several layers contain bones of woolly mammoth, horse, reindeer, cave lion and aurochs. Some of them bear traces of stone tools, and some layers contain tiny burnt bone fragments mixed with pigment. An extraordinary find is a fragment of bone decorated with a fine lattice pattern. Experts from the University of Cambridge also took part in the research.
