About the museum
The Postal Museum was established by decision of the Ministry of Posts and Telegraphs on 18 December 1918 as the first museum institution of independent Czechoslovakia. In 1976 it opened an extensive exhibition on the history of the postal administration in Vyšší Brod, in part of the former Cistercian monastery. The branch thus celebrated fifty years since its opening in 2026.
After 1989 the museum became part of the state enterprise Česká pošta (Czech Post) in 1993. Since 1 January 2026 it has been incorporated into the National Technical Museum, whose focus fits its collections well. The Postal Museum in Prague was reopened on 11 June 2026.
In Vyšší Brod, the permanent exhibition “Dějiny poštovnictví” (“The History of the Postal Service”) is divided into six thematic and chronological sections: from the beginnings of the Austrian post in the 16th–18th centuries, through the development of services during the Industrial Revolution and the rise of telecommunications, to the interwar and post-war Czechoslovak post. The history of postal transport is complemented by an exceptional collection of coaches, mail coaches and sleighs. For the youngest visitors, a Children’s Postal Playground has been prepared.
