About the museum

Rožmberk Castle dates from the mid-13th century and is among the oldest castles of the Vítkovci dynasty, predecessors of the Rožmberk family. Originally it was a complex of two castles, the Lower and the Upper Castle; of the Upper Castle only a stone tower called Jakobínka has survived. Rožmberk is first mentioned in 1250, under Václav I, under the German name Rosenberg, and it stood on a trade route leading through the Vyšší Brod pass to the Danube region.

In the 16th century the castle underwent intensive building work under Vilém of Rožmberk; Petr Vok had some interiors adapted under the influence of the Italian Renaissance, and after 1601 Jan Zrinský decorated the interiors in the spirit of Mannerism. In 1620 the castle was acquired by the imperial general Karel Bonaventura Buquoy, and his family owned it until 1945.

Jiří Jan Jindřich Buquoy, a passionate collector, rebuilt the castle in the 19th century in the romantic Neo-Gothic style into a family museum opened to the public. Today it is managed by the National Heritage Institute; the interiors contain collections of paintings, weapons, furniture, porcelain and glass. The Rožmberk Hall displays a portrait of the White Lady Perchta of Rožmberk.
