About the museum

The idea of founding a regional museum in Mělník first appeared in 1886, and two years later, on 21 March 1888, the founding general assembly of the museum society took place. The first collections moved between several temporary premises, including the town hall and the Mělník château, where they were first presented to the public in 1892. A significant achievement was taking part in the ethnographic exhibition of 1895.

After several more moves, the museum gained a permanent home in 1999 in house no. 54 on Náměstí Míru, in the former Capuchin monastery building. The core of the building is Gothic; its Baroque appearance was given by the Capuchins, who settled here in the mid-18th century. After a comprehensive reconstruction, a new permanent exhibition opened in 2000, and short-term exhibitions, lectures and concerts began to be held in two halls.

In 2003 the Central Bohemian Region took over the museum, and the institution received its present name, Regionální muzeum Mělník. The permanent exhibitions present the medieval town, a middle-class and rural interior, viticulture and the nature of the region. A separate exhibition of historic baby carriages on Ostruhová Street opened in 2003, and the museum also manages a rock dwelling in Lhotka u Mělníka, which is accessible in the summer season.
