About the museum
The Memorial to National Oppression and Resistance is housed in the upper château in Panenské Břežany, which belongs to the complex managed by the Oblastní muzeum Praha-východ. The complex also includes the Santini Chapel of St Anne and the château park.
The modern multimedia exhibition Crime and Punishment is on the first floor of the château. Using audiovisual technology, it introduces one of the most terrible periods in Czech history. Visitors are drawn into the events that led to the collapse of the First Czechoslovak Republic, see a replica of the Pankrác guillotine and walk through a train symbolising the transports of the Jewish population to concentration camps.
The exhibition also recalls the crimes of officials of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, such as Reinhard Heydrich and Karl Hermann Frank. The visit ends in a courtroom where sentences were passed on war criminals and collaborators. A virtual reality experience about the attack on Reinhard Heydrich complements the exhibition.
