About the museum
The Švýcárna building dates from the 19th century and stands above the château park in Slatiňany. It served as a base for aristocratic stays in the countryside; its architecture is inspired by English country life, which Vincenc Karel, a member of the princely Auersperg family, had encountered on his travels. The last resident lived here until 1976; afterwards the building was also used by filmmakers and gradually fell into disrepair.
With support from the European Union, the town of Slatiňany extensively reconstructed the building and on 29 June 2012 opened an interactive museum of the Old Kladruby horse here. The exhibition introduces the breeding of this horse breed, screens short documentary films and offers activities for children, such as a magnetic wall with game elements.
The museum includes the authentically furnished study of Professor František Bílek, who saved the Old Kladruby horses from extinction. The grounds also have a children's playground and a café serving light refreshments.
