About the museum

The museum is housed in Mikulov Château, whose history goes back to the 11th century. First a wooden border fortification stood here, later a stone castle. From 1249 it belonged to the Liechtensteins, and from 1575 to the Dietrichsteins, who made it a princely residence. The château burned down several times; after the fire of 1719 it was restored, and after another fire in 1945 it remained damaged for a long time. Reconstruction began in the 1950s, and since 1959 the château has been the seat of the regional museum.

The Mikulov museum society was founded in 1913, and the collections were built up from gifts and research by its members. Today’s museum manages historical, ethnographic, archaeological and natural history collections, and also looks after the château library with more than 11,000 volumes. Other visitor sites belong to the organisation: the Horní synagoga (Upper Synagogue), Archeopark Pavlov, the Dům přírody Pálavy in Dolní Věstonice, and the Památník bratří Mrštíků in Diváky.

Visitors can choose from several routes. Guided tours lead through the exhibition “Od gotiky po empír” (“From Gothic to Empire”), the Galerie Dietrichsteinů (Dietrichstein Gallery), the collecting interests of the noble family, the château library and the cellar with the giant barrel from 1643. Without a guide, you can walk through the archaeological exhibition on life under Pálava in Roman times and the interactive exhibition on the history of winemaking.
