About the museum
Archeopark Pavlov opens to the public one of the most important prehistoric sites from the era of the mammoth hunters. Settlement on the slopes of Pálava arose about 30,000 years ago and belongs to the Gravettian culture. The sites around Pavlov, Dolní Věstonice and Milovice document a successful Palaeolithic society which, in Moravia, was the first to use pottery, weave fabrics and grind stone, among other things.
The plan for the building arose in 2003 at the initiative of the Archaeological Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Brno. The museum was prepared by the Regional Museum in Mikulov in cooperation with the studio of Radko Květ. Because it lies in a protected landscape area, the building is hidden underground, and only towers of white concrete rise from the terrain, reminiscent of limestone rocks. The building received the Stavba roku award (Building of the Year) in 2016.
The exhibition covers more than 500 m² and combines modern audiovisual technology with classical presentation. It shows stone and bone tools, artistic objects including Venus figurines, a replica of the Dolní Věstonice triple grave and a dump of mammoth bones that has remained in its original place. The site is operated by the Regional Museum in Mikulov.
