About the museum

The earliest documented mention of the building on the island opposite Horažďovice dates from before 1670, when a paper mill stood here. After 1752 it was rebuilt as an island inn with a shooting range and a skittle alley, but as early as 1795 the production of handmade paper resumed. In 1807 the prominent Czech water engineer and forestry engineer Josef Rosenauer bought the paper mill for his son Josef. In 1834, after 164 years of operation, he converted it into a mill, and the renowned production of handmade paper in Horažďovice came to a definitive end.

The milling dynasty of the Rosenauers continued until the 1950s of the 20th century, when the owners were no longer allowed to operate the mill. The building was then used by state farms, fishermen and the army; it fell into decay and was threatened with demolition. In the 1990s the ruin was inherited by a direct descendant of the Rosenauers, likewise a water engineer, who decided to save the building and the remains of its equipment.

The mill now lies in the cadastral area of Velké Hydčice, on the island opposite the town. It houses a museum of milling and of the use of water energy; the mill also serves as a small hydroelectric power station and is a technical cultural monument. There is also a canoe camp on the island.
