About the museum
The water mill complex stands in Hoslovice by the Hoslovický stream, about 17 km south-west of Strakonice. The first mention of the mill dates from 1352; further sources date from the 1570s, when part of the village belonged to the Johanite estate. The last family of millers were the Harants, who bought the mill in 1829.
From the 1950s the Harants isolated themselves from society because of persecution under communism, and they rejected technical progress. As a result, the traditional rural way of farming from around the 1920s, including the original milling equipment, survived on the site. The last owner, Karel Harant, died in January 2004; the mill was then taken over by the South Bohemian Region, which in 2005 entrusted it to the Muzeum středního Pootaví (Middle Pootaví Museum) in Strakonice.
After reconstruction in 2005–2007 the complex was opened to the public in April 2008, and in June 2008 it was declared a national cultural monument. Since 2012 a new information and cultural centre with an ethnographic exhibition on life in the Šumava Podlesí region has also been in use. The complex consists of the mill with its residential part, cowsheds with a shed, and a barn.
