About the museum
The Šenov Museum is part of the Šenov library, which was founded in 1920. It was ceremonially opened on 29 August 1998 in library premises in the nursery school on Lipová Street, with an exhibition area of about 68 m². A first small exhibition on the history of the village was created, and the museum began to hold exhibitions, discussions and educational programmes for schools. The official name of the institution is Knihovna & Šenovské muzeum (Library & Šenov Museum).
In 2003 the museum received new premises of 190 m², became a member of the Asociace muzeí a galerií ČR, and its collections were entered in the Centrální evidence sbírek (Central Collections Register). It publishes the Věstník Šenovského muzea (Bulletin of the Šenov Museum). In 2008 a small exhibition hall was added in the Panská oratoř (manorial oratory) of the Church of Divine Providence (kostel Prozřetelnosti Boží). From 2009, however, the museum lost most of its space because the nursery school needed it, and for some time it operated almost without its own exhibition space.
Today it is housed in the old school, one of the oldest buildings in Šenov, which was built in 1856 and served teaching until 2003. The permanent exhibition includes, for example, a reconstructed room from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and a corridor mapping the history of the building; there is also a section for changing exhibitions. Most of the collections are donations and loans from local residents, and the oldest exhibit is a book from 1668. The museum also holds talks and lectures on the history of the town.
