About the museum
The popular science centre Velký svět techniky (Great World of Technology) opened in September 2014 in the Dolní oblast Vítkovice complex in Ostrava. Its architect is Josef Pleskot, and the building is recognised by its mirrored façade. It is run by the Dolní oblast VÍTKOVICE association. Opposite, in the historic brick building of the former power station, is Malý svět techniky U6, which forms the second half of the whole Svět techniky (World of Technology) project.
Velký svět techniky has four permanent interactive exhibitions: the Dětský svět (Children's World) for children aged two to six, the Svět vědy a objevů (World of Science and Discovery), the Svět civilizace (World of Civilisation), and the Svět přírody (World of Nature) with an outdoor geological and botanical garden. Visitors can try the exhibits for themselves. The World of Civilisation exhibition has recently been reworked and deals, among other things, with decarbonisation, water, the circular economy and artificial intelligence.
The centre also includes a cinema hall with 194 seats and an 18 × 10 metre screen, the Divadlo vědy (Science Theatre) with science shows, classrooms, laboratories and workshops for schools, and an area with temporary exhibitions near the entrance. The centre also offers holiday day camps, creative workshops and birthday parties. According to the operator, a tour of all the exhibitions takes four to five hours on average.
