About the museum

The Beekeeping Museum in Rosice is part of the grounds of the beekeeping centre of the Český svaz včelařů (Czech Beekeepers' Association) on the edge of town. It continues the tradition of the queen-bee breeding station in Rosice, which František Posádka founded on this site in 1934. The present building was constructed in 1972–1975, and the museum was established at that time. The complex also includes a lecture hall and the library of the Český svaz včelařů, which moved to Rosice from Brno in 1996.

The main exhibition hall displays objects from the past of Czech and Moravian beekeeping. Many of them are on loan from the museum at Kačina Chateau, and some belong to the Český svaz včelařů; the museum's own exhibits are gradually increasing. You can see old log hives and straw skeps, figural hives, for example with Saint Ambrose or Saint John of Nepomuk, hand presses for comb foundation, a wax press and smokers.

A special exhibit is the original wooden Hruška honey extractor, which its inventor demonstrated in Brno in 1865; it uses centrifugal force to spin the honey out instead of the previous pressing. Showcases commemorate personalities of Czech and Moravian beekeeping. Outside there is a small open-air museum of older hives and log hives, and a modern apiary.
