About the museum

The Villa Stiassni was built in 1929 to a design by the architect Ernst Wiesner for the Brno textile manufacturer Alfred Stiassni and his wife Hermine. It stands in the residential Masarykova čtvrť (Masaryk Quarter), where many important buildings of modern architecture were built in the interwar period. The house was one of the representative buildings of the Brno of its time, and its garden slopes down the hill above Pisárky.

During the communist era the villa served as a government representation building for official visits and meetings. Today it is managed by the National Heritage Institute (Národní památkový ústav), which restored it and opened it to the public after the restoration was completed in December 2014. Since 2018 it has been part of the worldwide network Iconic Houses, which brings together significant houses of the 20th century.

The villa also serves as the Centre for the Restoration of 20th-Century Architectural Monuments. Visitors can take a guided tour of the representative rooms from the First Republic and of the family’s private apartments, walk through the garden and visit Café Ernst. The complex also hosts short-term exhibitions and educational programmes for children.
