About the museum
The Villa Nova archaeological open-air museum lies in the Orlické hory between Rychnov nad Kněžnou and Deštné. Its construction began in 1992 and is gradually taking shape on an area of about six hectares. The aim is to bring to life a medieval colonisation village of the 13th and 14th centuries.
The buildings are based on archaeological finds and are constructed according to the principles of experimental archaeology, that is, using replicas of period tools and historical technologies. In this way, methods that have so far been documented only theoretically are tested, and their labour intensity and the durability of the finished buildings are assessed. In the grounds you will find, for example, pit houses, bread ovens, a barn and a smithy.
The operator is the Centre for Experimental Archaeology and Regional History Villa Nova Uhřínov, which also manages the Museum of Winter Sports, Tourism and Crafts in Deštné in the Orlické hory. For schools there is a programme called Okno do minulosti (Window into the Past), which, according to the operator, has been attended by more than 53,000 children.
