About the museum
The museum was created by converting a former granary from the mid-19th century in Rokytnice v Orlických horách. The project involved the town of Rokytnice v Orlických horách and the Hradec Králové Region. The aim was to establish, closer to the centre of the mountains, a further exhibition of the Museum and Gallery of the Orlické hory in Rychnov nad Kněžnou, which operates the museum.
Architects from the Šuda – Horský office in Hradec Králové carefully combined the original wooden elements with glass and steel. A feature of the building is the glazed skylight in the roof ridge and the glass floors on each storey, through which light enters. The project was co-financed from the Regional Operational Programme NUTS II Northeast.
The exhibition “Přírodou za řemesly Orlických hor” (Through Nature to the Crafts of the Orlické hory) shows how people are connected to the environment in which they live. It presents traditional crafts together with local raw materials and energy sources, from glassmaking, blacksmithing and papermaking to textile production. The most prominent element is a three-storey model of a forest habitat with more than fifty mounted specimens, mainly birds. Information is provided by exhibits, labels, audio-visual guides and interactive encyclopaedias. In 2026 the audio-visual equipment of the exhibition was renewed.
