About the museum

The villa was built in 1931 to 1932 by the Prague lawyer JUDr. Josef Winternitz for himself, his wife Jenny and their children Suzana and Petr. It was designed by Adolf Loos and Karel Lhota; the commission document is dated 5 September 1931 and the occupancy permit was issued already on 9 September 1932. It is Loos’s last house and shows typical features of his architecture, above all the unusual arrangement of interior spaces called Raumplan, carefully designed built-in furniture and carefully chosen wall cladding. The resemblance to the Müller Villa is therefore no coincidence.

The family lived in the house only until 1941, when racial persecution forced them to transfer the villa. The City of Prague later used it as a kindergarten, which was located here until 1995. Josef Winternitz and his son Petr perished in Auschwitz; Jenny and Suzana survived the war but never returned to the villa. The descendants of the original owners regained the house in 1997, restored it in 1999 to 2002 to its 1930s appearance, and since 2017 it has been open to the public.

Today the villa is managed by the association Winternitzova vila z.s. Visitors can walk through the interiors with period furniture and visit current exhibitions; guided tours, a cultural programme and experience-based overnight stays are also available. On the second floor is a permanent exhibition that recalls the history of the 20th century through the fate of the family and the house.
